Quick answer: The overnight train or sleeper bus almost always beats the budget flight once you count baggage fees, airport transfers and the hotel night you save. The exception is any leg over about 800 kilometres, and any island leg during monsoon season — where the flight is not just faster but structurally more reliable.

Most Southeast Asia itineraries fall apart in the gaps between cities. The sightseeing is easy to plan; the eleven hours between Hanoi and Da Nang is where people either lose a day or lose ₹4,000.

Here is how the real options compare on the routes Indians actually take.

The Comparison That Actually Matters

A budget flight's headline fare is never the real price. Add checked baggage, a seat, and two airport transfers, and a THB 700 Bangkok to Chiang Mai fare becomes something closer to THB 1,800 and four hours door to door.

Hidden cost

Typical scale

Checked bag, prepaid

VND 480,000 for 20kg on VietJet; PHP 340–529 domestic on Cebu Pacific

Checked bag, at airport

VND 180,000 per kg on VietJet regional; PHP 250 per kg on Cebu Pacific after the first 20kg

Cabin allowance

7kg total on VietJet, Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, Scoot, Nok, Lion — including your handbag

Airport transfers

BKK Suvarnabhumi is 30km out; DPS to Ubud is 37km but 1.5 to 2.5 hours in traffic

The hotel night

An overnight train or bus saves one

That "at airport" excess rate is the one that ruins budgets. On VietJet's regional routes it is roughly four times the domestic rate. Weigh your bag before you leave the hotel.

Thailand

Route

Best option

Time and cost

Bangkok ↔ Chiang Mai

Overnight train, 2nd class AC sleeper

12–15 hrs, roughly THB 690–1,040

Bangkok ↔ Chiang Mai

VIP bus

9–10 hrs, THB 600–800

Bangkok ↔ Chiang Mai

Flight

1 hr 10 min, THB 500–2,500

Bangkok ↔ Phuket / Krabi

Bus

10–12 hrs, THB 700–1,500

Bangkok ↔ Phuket / Krabi

Flight

1–1.5 hrs, THB 500–2,500

Phuket ↔ Phi Phi

Ferry

1.5–2 hrs, THB 450–600 standard, THB 800–1,000 speedboat

The Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper is one of the genuinely good overnight trains in Asia — book a lower berth in a 2nd class AC carriage and you will sleep. Last-minute budget airline fares on Thai domestic routes run three to five times advance prices, so the flight only wins if you book early.

Book through 12Go (adds a booking fee), the State Railway's D-Ticket portal (accepts most overseas cards, occasionally flaky), or Baolau.

Getting into Bangkok from the airport: the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi is 28 minutes for THB 15 to 45 and beats a taxi in traffic every time. From Don Mueang, the SRT Red Line is 25 minutes for THB 12 to 42.

Vietnam

Vietnam has the region's best long-distance rail and its most punishing bus rides.

Route

Option

Time and cost

Hanoi ↔ Saigon

Reunification Express, 4-berth soft sleeper

29–32 hrs, roughly VND 1.67–1.76 million

Hanoi ↔ Da Nang

Train sleeper

~15–18 hrs, from about USD 52

Hanoi ↔ Da Nang

Sleeper bus

12–18 hrs, from about USD 21

Hanoi ↔ Da Nang

Flight

1 hr 20 min, from about USD 24

Hanoi ↔ Sapa

Limousine van

5.5–6 hrs, VND 320,000–450,000

Hanoi ↔ Lao Cai (Sapa)

Overnight train soft sleeper

7.5 hrs, VND 440,000–460,000

Two honest notes. The full Hanoi to Saigon run is a 30-hour commitment that most travellers should break at Da Nang or Hue rather than do in one go. And Lao Cai station is still an hour from Sapa town — the train is not door to door.

Book on dsvn.vn (Vietnam Railways, now accepts overseas cards), Baolau (adds about 2.7 percent on card), or 12Go (roughly USD 3 per ticket international-card surcharge). Station counters are cash only in dong. Long-distance reservations open around 60 days out.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore

Bali to the Gilis is the fast boat: about two hours, USD 22 to 42, with something like 27 sailings a day from Padangbai, Sanur, Serangan and Amed. Sanur to Nusa Penida is about 40 minutes. Crossings do get cancelled in rough seas and operator safety records vary — book a reputable operator, not the cheapest sticker on the beach.

Kuala Lumpur to Penang on the ETS train is the region's most underrated ride: 3 hours 35 minutes on the Express service for around MYR 86, or 4 hours 20 minutes on Gold for around MYR 60. It is comfortable, punctual and lands you at Butterworth for the ferry to Georgetown. Note that KTMB moved to flexi-fares, so prices move.

KL to Singapore is 5 to 6 hours by bus including the border, at roughly USD 17 to 32, against about an hour in the air plus two airport transfers. For Johor Bahru to Woodlands specifically, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau is five minutes for SGD 5 — tickets release a month ahead and sell out on weekends. The RTS Link is expected in January 2027, after which the shuttle winds down.

Sri Lanka, Cambodia and the Philippines

Sri Lanka's hill country train is the one journey in this article worth taking for its own sake. Colombo to Kandy is about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45; Kandy to Ella is 4.5 to 5 hours. Fares are around LKR 900 in third class, 1,200 in second and 1,500 to 2,000 in first on the Colombo–Kandy leg.

Reserved seats and observation cars open 30 days ahead and sell out. Unreserved second and third class never sell out — if you missed the window, you can still travel, just standing for a while. Book at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk, which takes overseas cards.

Siem Reap to Phnom Penh is about six hours by bus, from roughly USD 28 on the better operators. Book direct or through 12Go, Bookaway or Easybook.

The Philippines is the one country where flying is not optional. Manila to Caticlan for Boracay works out around PHP 1,600 all-in including the tricycle and boat; Manila to El Nido about PHP 2,000 plus a van; Manila to Coron about PHP 2,800. Book 14 to 21 days out for the good fare band. And note that El Nido's Lio airport has no night flights — a delayed morning flight can cost you the day.

Monsoon: When the Boat Simply Does Not Run

This is the planning factor that most itineraries ignore.

Build one to two buffer days around any island leg. Not as slack in the itinerary — as an actual assumption that one boat will not run.

Key Takeaways

Are sleeper buses safe?

Reputable operators on main routes are fine. The variable is the driver and the road, not the bus. Vietnamese sleeper buses have narrow berths sized for shorter frames — if you are over about 5'10", the train is worth the extra money.

Will my Indian card work on these booking sites?

Usually. 12Go, Baolau, Bookaway and Vietnam Railways all take Indian cards, some with a surcharge. Declines happen; carry a second card from a different bank and always pay in the local currency rather than INR.

Should I book intercity transport before I fly?

Book anything time-critical — Sri Lanka's reserved train seats, the Tebrau shuttle on a weekend, flights to Palawan. Leave the rest flexible; buses and standard ferries have capacity.

What about renting a scooter to get between towns?

For short hops, sometimes. Read the licence and insurance gap on renting scooters abroad first — the exposure is larger than most travellers assume.

Prices and schedules move. Fares here were compiled from public sources in August 2026 and several — Thai rail fares in particular — come from older published tables. Treat them as ranges for planning, and confirm on the operator's own site before you commit.
