Safety and scams to avoid

  • Tinder/Dating App Scopolamine

El Poblado, Parque Lleras, Zona Rosa

Same as Bogotá but particularly common in Medellín's Lleras nightlife zone. Foreign men targeted via Tinder/Bumble matches who suggest meeting at specific bars.

How to avoid it: Verify dates' profiles (recent active, multiple photos, friends list). Meet only at recognized public venues. Tell hostel/hotel where you're going. Cancel if instinct says odd.

  • Comuna 13 Unauthorized Guides

    Comuna 13 entrance areas

Touts at the San Javier metro station offer "tours" of Comuna 13 at very low prices. They lead tourists through unsafe back alleys.

How to avoid it: Use established tour companies (Real City Tours, Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour, Casa Kolacho). Always book ahead online. The official meeting point is at San Javier metro Plaza.

  • Strawberry/Cocaine Touts

    Parque Lleras, El Poblado bars

Touts approach foreign tourists offering drugs. Often work with corrupt police who appear minutes later to "arrest" you, demanding bribes.

How to avoid it: Refuse all such offers firmly. Walk away. Colombia has tough drug penalties (US Embassy strongly warns against). Always have phone ready to call Tourism Police +57-1-322-4000.
