Hradec Králové, Czechia: travel guide
The "Salon of the Republic" — Hradec Králové is celebrated as the finest example of early 20th-century Czech functionalist urban planning. The new town, designed by Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár between 1900–1930, is a living textbook of Czech modernism. The historic old town at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers preserves a Gothic cathedral, a White Tower and a compact medieval square. The city's military history — site of the decisive Battle of Königgrätz in 1866 — is documented at the Military History Museum near Chlum. A peaceful, genuine Czech city 100 km east of Prague.
