Telč, Czechia: travel guide
A perfectly preserved Renaissance town that feels frozen in the 16th century, Telč is the smallest UNESCO World Heritage town in the Czech Republic and one of Europe's most photogenic. The elongated main square — Náměstí Zachariáše z Hradce — is lined with an unbroken arcade of pastel Renaissance and Baroque townhouses in yellow, pink, green and ochre, reflected in the still surface of two artificial ponds that encircle the old town like a moat. At the far end stands a fairy-tale castle complex. The entire ensemble was built by nobleman Zachariáš of Hradec after a 1530 fire, remodelled by Italian architects, and has remained virtually unchanged. A worthy excursion from Brno (55 km).
