Aswan, Egypt: travel guide

Egypt's southernmost tourist city and its most serene — a relaxed Nubian city on a majestic bend of the Nile framed by golden desert dunes, granite boulders and verdant islands. Aswan is the gateway to the monumental Abu Simbel temples (280 km south), best seen on a dawn flight from Aswan airport. The enchanting Philae Temple rises from an island above the High Dam. Nubian villages on Elephantine Island and the west bank offer a warmth and colour absent from the north. A felucca sunset cruise past the Aga Khan Mausoleum is one of Egypt's most memorable experiences. Aswan's cooler winters (Nov–Feb) draw Nile cruise passengers year-round.

  • Taxi main way to get around

Seeded from the curated primary_local_modes array; per-city parameters not yet researched.

  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Nubian Village Boat Overcharging

    Aswan waterfront

Boat operators claim the standard government-regulated price is "only for Egyptians" and quote tourists 5× the official fare to cross to Elephantine.

How to avoid it: Use the official government ferry (EGP 5). Private boats should be EGP 100–150 return — refuse anything higher.

  • Unsolicited "Free" Temple Guides

    Philae Island boat landing

Men at the boat landing insist on being your unpaid guide, then demand EGP 200–500 at the end.

How to avoid it: Keep walking and politely say "no thank you." Buy an official guided tour that includes guide fee before arriving.
