Füssen, Germany: travel guide

A small Alpine town of 15 000 residents and gateway to Germany's most photographed castle. Neuschwanstein — King Ludwig II's 19th-century Romanticist fantasy — sits on a rocky outcrop 4 km from town, its white turrets rising from the forested Allgäu Alps (direct inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle). Hohenschwangau Castle below is where Ludwig spent his childhood. The Alpsee lake between the two castles is perfect for swimming in summer. Füssen's own Hohes Schloss and Altstadt are charming and largely missed by day-trippers. Best visited May–October.
