Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany: travel guide

The most completely preserved medieval walled city in Germany, on a promontory above the Tauber River on the Romantic Road. Its intact town walls, towers and half-timbered burgher houses are virtually unchanged since the Thirty Years' War. The Plönlein Y-junction is one of Germany's most photographed spots. In December the Reiterlesmarkt on the Marktplatz is among Germany's most atmospheric Christmas markets. Best visited May–October or December.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Authentic vs Tourist Shop Overcharging

    Main pedestrian street, Rothenburg

Many shops on the Schmiedgasse sell Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas decorations and Schneeballen (deep-fried pastry balls) at inflated tourist prices. The town's Schneeballen are a local tradition but quality varies enormously.

How to avoid it: The Käthe Wohlfahrt flagship store on Herrngasse 1–3 has fixed prices. For Schneeballen, the bakery on Burggasse has the most authentic version at non-tourist prices.
