Depok, Indonesia: travel guide
A university city and residential satellite directly south of Jakarta, anchored by the sprawling red-brick campus of Universitas Indonesia (UI) — the country's most prestigious public university, founded 1849. Depok is intellectually lively and café-dense along the Margonda corridor, while its southern neighbourhoods border the Situ Ciliwung green belt. The KRL Commuterline's Bogor Line makes it one of Jakarta's most transit-accessible suburbs, carrying over 200,000 daily commuters.

Safety and scams to avoid
Overpriced "campus tour guide" scams near UI gate
Universitas Indonesia main gate (Gerbang Kenari), Margonda Raya
Unofficial individuals near the UI gate offer walking or cycling tours of the campus at inflated prices (IDR 200,000–400,000 for routes any visitor can do alone for free). Some present laminated "official" ID cards that are fabricated.
How to avoid it: The UI campus is fully open to public visitors without any guide fee. Download the campus map from the UI website, rent a bicycle at the campus Koperasi for IDR 10,000/hr, and self-guide. Politely decline any unsolicited guide offers at the gate.
