Safety and scams to avoid
Unlicensed Taxi & Metered Fare Manipulation
KL Sentral, KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Chow Kit
Unlicensed taxi drivers approach tourists at KL Sentral, KLCC and Bukit Bintang quoting fixed inflated rates — MYR 50-80 for a trip worth MYR 10-20 by meter. Some metered taxis tamper with meters or take deliberately long routes to inflate the fare.
How to avoid it: Always use the Grab app — it shows a fixed price before you confirm and tracks your route live. Avoid street-hailed taxis outside KLCC, KL Sentral and Bukit Bintang. If using a metered taxi, insist the meter starts at MYR 3 flag-fall before moving.
Lucky Draw & Investment Invitation Scam
KLCC park surrounds, Berjaya Times Square, Pavilion KL food courts
A well-dressed stranger claims you won a lucky draw or invites you to an investment seminar. They escort you to a nearby office where you are pressured to deposit cash for 'tax clearance' before receiving a prize that does not exist.
How to avoid it: Do not follow strangers to any secondary location. Legitimate lucky draws never require a cash deposit. Say 'No thank you' firmly and walk away. Report to Tourist Police: +603-2166-8322.
