Safety and scams to avoid
Overpriced Hotel Zone Taxis
Cancún Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)
Unlicensed taxis outside resorts charge 3–5× the metered rate. They quote in USD and claim the meter "doesn't work."
How to avoid it: Use Uber or InDriver for all rides in Cancún. Alternatively, use ADO buses along the Hotel Zone boulevard (MXN 12, very reliable). Agree on price BEFORE entering any taxi.
Spiked Drinks at Clubs
Cancún Hotel Zone nightclubs, especially Coco Bongo area
Drinks spiked with Rohypnol or GHB, usually targeting solo travellers. Victims report memory gaps and theft.
How to avoid it: Never leave your drink unattended. Accept drinks only from bartenders you can watch. Travel in groups at night. If you feel unwell suddenly, alert venue staff immediately.
