  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Pilgrim truck overcharging

    Kinpun Base Camp truck terminal

Truck drivers or touts charge tourists a premium above the standard pilgrim fare, sometimes claiming a "foreigner rate" exists. No official foreigner surcharge is in place for the trucks.

How to avoid it: The correct truck fare is 2,000 MMK each way per person (as of 2025). Pay at the official ticket window, not to individual drivers. Keep your ticket for the return journey.

  • Summit food and souvenir price gouging

    Yatetaung Summit plateau, Golden Rock

Food stalls and souvenir shops on the summit charge 3–5x the prices found in Kinpun village. Pilgrims and tourists pay heavily for water and snacks after the climb.

How to avoid it: Carry sufficient water, snacks and cash from Kinpun or your hotel before ascending. Prices on the summit are predictably inflated — treat it as a resort surcharge and budget accordingly.
