Visby, Sweden: travel guide
Visby is the medieval jewel of the Baltic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose thirteenth-century limestone ring wall encircles a remarkably intact Hanseatic trading city on the island of Gotland. Roses clamber over ruins of twelve medieval churches within the walls, and the narrow lanes between warehouses converted to restaurants and boutiques have barely changed in outline since the height of Visby's mercantile power. Every August the city floods with costumed participants for Medieval Week, one of Europe's largest historical festivals, transforming the streets into a living tableau of knights, merchants, and market stalls. Outside the walls, Gotland's limestone landscape of rauks — dramatic sea stacks — and flower meadows draws cyclists and nature lovers across the entire island from May to September. The ferry crossing from the Swedish mainland takes three hours and delivers visitors directly to the town quay beneath the famous windmill silhouette.

Safety and scams to avoid
Fake Sold-Out Accommodation Listings
Online — targeting Visby/Gotland visitors in July–August (Medieval Week)
During peak summer and Medieval Week (first week of August), legitimate accommodation genuinely sells out months in advance. Scammers post fake apartment or cottage listings on informal platforms, collect full payment, and disappear.
How to avoid it: Book only via verified platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb with reviews, official hotel sites). Pay by credit card for chargeback protection. If a deal looks too good to be true during peak season, it is.
