Taipei, Taiwan: travel guide

Taiwan's vibrant capital blends futuristic skyscrapers with ancient temples, buzzing night markets and mountain-framed parks. Taipei 101 dominated the skyline for decades; today the city's real draw is its street-food culture, the world-class National Palace Museum, a walkable MRT grid, and a café scene that never sleeps. Hot springs at Beitou are a 30-minute MRT ride; Yangmingshan's volcanic trails are even closer.

  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Fake Taxi at Airport

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport arrivals hall

Unlicensed drivers approach arrivals offering "official" taxi rides at flat rates significantly above meter. They may display fake taxi IDs and position themselves before the official taxi queue.

How to avoid it: Use only the official taxi queue outside arrivals (marked with red-and-yellow taxi signage). Better yet, use the Airport MRT (direct to Taipei Main Station in 35 min, TWD 160) or book a pre-paid shuttle through your hotel. Verify the meter starts at TWD 70 (flagfall).

  • Temple Fortune Teller Overcharge

    Longshan Temple, Xingtian Temple

A person approaches tourists near major temples, offers a brief fortune reading or blessing ritual, then demands an extortionate fee (TWD 5,000–20,000) citing "spirit cleansing" or insisting payment will ward off misfortune shown in the reading.

How to avoid it: Temple fortune stalls should display fixed prices. Agree on price before starting any session. Official temple poe divination tools (moon-block throwing, fortune sticks) are always free to use independently.

  • Overpriced "Tourist Restaurant" Near Night Markets

Shilin Night Market, Raohe Night Market entrances

Restaurant touts at night market entrances steer tourists into adjacent sit-down restaurants with English menus and tourist photos. Prices are 3–5× the market rate; bill includes unexplained service charges and itemised "condiment fees".

How to avoid it: Eat inside the night market itself, not the restaurants immediately adjacent. For sit-down meals, check Google Reviews before entering. Ask for menu in Chinese to compare prices.
