Getting around

  • Metro main way to get around

MRT Blue Line. Service window approximates 06:00-23:59; below ~1 km the walk beats descending to a platform.

  • Train main way to get around

BTS Skytrain, seeded under mode_code 'train' -- see the fare-rule note. Service window approximates 05:15-23:59.

  • Tuktuk main way to get around

Bargained, no meter. 6 km ceiling: real tuktuk trips are a short urban hop or a tourist experience, not a cross-city ride -- beyond that distance nobody quoted here is riding one.

  • Ride Hail

App-hailed, same congested-traffic speed as the metered taxi.

  • Taxi

Street-hailable, metered. 18 km/h reflects Bangkok daytime traffic, not open-road speed -- see migration header.

  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Tuk-tuk "free tour" scam

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew area

Driver offers ฿20 city tour, takes you to gem/tailor commission shops instead of the temples.

How to avoid it: Use Grab or hotel taxis. If you want a tuk-tuk, negotiate to a specific destination first.

  • "The temple is closed"

Around Grand Palace + Wat Pho

Strangers near the entrance tell you the temple is closed for a ceremony and offer to take you to a "lucky Buddha" attraction (commission shops).

How to avoid it: Grand Palace & Wat Pho are always open during posted hours. Walk directly to the official entrance.

  • Generic tourist overcharge

    Major tourist zones

Tourists are quoted significantly above local price.

How to avoid it: Verify prices upfront. Use registered taxis/apps.
