Safety and scams to avoid
Timeshare and "free attraction ticket" pitches
Tourist areas, Mission Valley, hotel lobbies
Booths and callers offer free or deeply discounted zoo/SeaWorld tickets, harbor cruises or meals in exchange for attending a "short" 90-minute presentation that becomes a high-pressure timeshare/vacation-club sales pitch lasting hours.
How to avoid it: Buy attraction tickets only from official websites or the venue. Decline "free ticket" offers that require a presentation.
Fake or predatory parking attendants
Beach lots, Balboa Park, downtown event days
Individuals pose as parking attendants near beaches or during Padres games / Comic-Con and collect cash to "park" you in spaces that are actually free, metered or not theirs to sell, sometimes leading to a tow.
How to avoid it: Pay only at official meters, kiosks, or app (e.g. official city parking). Be wary of anyone waving you into a lot for cash.
Beach and boardwalk vendor overcharging
Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla
Unlicensed vendors sell souvenirs, sunglasses, henna or "tours" at inflated prices, or quote one price then demand more, targeting tourists who don't know local rates.
How to avoid it: Agree on the full price before any service. Use licensed shops for valuables and tours.
Border-crossing scams (San Ysidro / Tijuana)
San Ysidro border, Tijuana
Fake "expedited crossing" agents, unofficial taxi touts quoting huge fares, and people offering to "hold your place" in line for cash prey on day-trippers crossing to Tijuana.
How to avoid it: Use only official pedestrian crossings and the SENTRI/Ready lanes. Use authorized taxis or rideshare with set fares. Never pay strangers to skip the line.
Costumed performers / aggressive tip demands
Seaport Village, Gaslamp, beach boardwalks
Street performers and costumed characters pose for photos with tourists, then aggressively demand $10-20 tips afterward.
How to avoid it: Agree on a tip (a dollar or two) or decline before any photo is taken.
