Safety and scams to avoid
Unofficial Trekking Guide Overcharging
Sapa Market area
Unlicensed "guides" (often children or teenagers) attach themselves to trekking groups and then demand large fees at the end of the trek, sometimes with other locals present.
How to avoid it: Book guides only through licensed operators (Sapa Sisters, Sapa O'Chau) or your hotel. Agree on the full price before departing. Ignore unsolicited guides.
Handicraft Guilt Selling
Lao Chai & Ta Van villages
Village women and children follow tourists throughout a trek offering handicrafts, then become upset or aggressive if nothing is bought after hours of walking with you.
How to avoid it: Decide upfront whether you want to buy. Purchasing from village co-op shops is fairer than from individual persistent sellers.
