Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Taxi Overcharging at GIG Airport

    Galeão International Airport arrivals hall

Unlicensed taxi touts approach arrivals and offer fixed rates. The "fixed rate" is 3-5x the metered fare. They may use fake official-looking lanyards.

How to avoid it: Only use yellow metered taxis from the official rank outside arrivals, or book Uber/99 app before leaving the terminal. Official taxi booths inside arrivals sell prepaid vouchers at fair fixed rates.

  • Distraction Theft on Copacabana / Ipanema

    Beach areas and beachfront promenade

One person spills something on you or stops to chat; a partner steals your bag, phone or valuables while you are distracted. Works in groups of 2-3.

How to avoid it: Leave valuables in your hotel safe. Carry only what you need in a waterproof pouch worn under clothing. Ignore strangers who approach you suddenly on the beach.

  • Friendly Stranger Drug Scam

Lapa nightlife district and Santa Teresa

A friendly local invites you for a drink, drops a drug (boa noite Cinderela) into your beverage, then robs you while incapacitated. Victims often have no memory of the event.

How to avoid it: Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers. Go to bars with friends. Use the buddy system in Lapa at night.

  • Fake Tour Guides at Cristo Redentor

Cog railway and top of Corcovado

Unofficial guides approach and offer to take you to a "special viewpoint" or charge for photos. Some may demand payment after the fact.

How to avoid it: Buy cog railway tickets only from official Trem do Corcovado counters or the official website. Decline any guide who approaches you unsolicited.
