  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Lightning Robbery (Arrastão) in Congonhas Area

Congonhas Airport and surrounding streets at night

Groups of youths descend on a target and grab phones, bags and jewellery in seconds before running off. Common near budget accommodation south of the city.

How to avoid it: Stay aware of your surroundings, especially after dark. Use Uber rather than walking at night. Keep phones in your pocket rather than visible in your hand.

  • Fake Police Officers

    Centro and Liberdade

Two men in plain clothes show police badges and demand to inspect your wallet for "counterfeit bills." They pocket cash while searching.

How to avoid it: Real police never demand to inspect your wallet on the street. Ask for their official ID, offer to go to the nearest police station. Cooperate but do not hand over your wallet.

  • ATM Skimming Devices

Convenience stores and standalone ATMs at night

Card readers with hidden skimmers are attached to ATM machines. PINs captured via tiny hidden cameras.

How to avoid it: Use ATMs inside bank branches during banking hours only. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN. Enable real-time transaction alerts on your banking app.
