Safety and scams to avoid

  • Overpriced Tour Package Inflation

Caracoles Street tour agency strip, San Pedro de Atacama

Some agencies on Caracoles Street sell "full-service" packages to El Tatio geysers, Valle de la Luna, or lagoons at 40–80% above the standard market rate, claiming their vehicle or guide is "official" or "licenced". They may also substitute sites visited without notice.

How to avoid it: Compare prices at 3+ agencies before booking. Standard rates: El Tatio 22,000–28,000 CLP, Valle de la Luna sunset 12,000–15,000 CLP. Confirm exactly which sites are included in writing. Licensed agencies display their SERNATUR registration.

  • Bolivian Border Currency Exchange Scam

San Pedro de Atacama informal money changers

Informal money changers near the Jama border crossing or in San Pedro town offer to exchange Bolivianos or Argentinian pesos at rates appearing favourable. The exchange uses sleight of hand to deliver fewer notes than calculated.

How to avoid it: Use ATMs in San Pedro (Banco Estado and Scotiabank have ATMs on Caracoles). Count notes immediately before the money changer pockets their side of the deal. Favour bank or official casa de cambio exchanges.
