Safety and scams to avoid
Pickpockets on Cerro Footpaths and Ascensores
Cerro Alegre, Cerro Concepción, ascensor entrances
The narrow footpaths between cerros, the ascensor queues, and the steep staircases create ideal conditions for pickpockets targeting distracted tourists photographing murals. Phone snatching while you are using your device for navigation is also reported.
How to avoid it: Keep your phone in a secure pocket when not in active use. On the cerros, be aware of your surroundings on narrow paths. Avoid leaving bags unattended at ascensor entrances. Don't photograph while holding your phone extended far from your body on crowded paths.
