Siwa Oasis, Egypt: travel guide
Egypt's most remote and enchanting oasis — a Berber island of emerald date palms and olive groves floating in the midst of the Libyan Desert, 50 km from the Libyan border. Alexander the Great made the arduous desert crossing in 332 BCE to consult the Oracle of Amun here; the ruins of the Oracle Temple still stand above the crumbling mud-brick Shali Fortress. Cleopatra's Spring, the salt lakes, the Great Sand Sea dunes and Siwa's unique Siwi Berber culture make this one of North Africa's most extraordinary destinations. Siwa's inaccessibility — 8 hours by bus from Cairo, no commercial flights — keeps it blessedly uncrowded. Oct–Apr is the only realistic visiting window.

Safety and scams to avoid
4WD Fake Break-Down
Desert road to Great Sand Sea
A 4WD "breaks down" mid-dune in an area with no mobile signal, and the driver demands extra cash to "fix" the vehicle.
How to avoid it: Book only through established Siwa hotels or the Siwan Handicrafts cooperative. Get the driver's name and agency in writing before departing.
