Dublin, Ireland: travel guide

Ireland's vibrant capital straddles the mouth of the River Liffey on the east coast — a city of Georgian elegance, Viking heritage, world-class literature and the finest pub culture on earth. Medieval Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral anchor the old city; Trinity College's illuminated Book of Kells draws over half a million visitors a year; Kilmainham Gaol tells the story of Irish independence with quiet power. The Guinness Storehouse — the world's most visited brewery attraction — pours a perfect pint at its seventh-floor Gravity Bar with panoramic views over the rooftops. Dublin's literary legacy is extraordinary: four Nobel laureates (Yeats, Beckett, Shaw, Heaney) and one James Joyce were nurtured in these streets. Best visited Mar–Oct; Christmas in Dublin is magical with lights and markets.

  • Transit Pass main way to get around

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Temple Bar Overpricing

Temple Bar pubs and restaurants, particularly on the main square

Tourists are charged 2–3× the normal Dublin price for drinks and food in the most touristy Temple Bar spots. A pint of Guinness that costs €6 elsewhere is charged €8–10. This is technically legal as prices must be displayed.

How to avoid it: Check the price of a pint before ordering. A pint of Guinness should cost €5.50–€7.00 across Dublin — anything over €8 is overpriced. The most authentic pubs and best value are one or two streets away from the main square.

  • Taxi Overcharging at Dublin Airport

Dublin Airport taxi rank and informal/unlicensed drivers outside the terminal

Unlicensed taxi drivers approach passengers outside the terminal and offer fixed-price rides to the city that are significantly above the metered fare. They may claim meters are broken or that a fixed price is standard.

How to avoid it: Only use the official Dublin Airport taxi rank (clearly signposted inside the terminal). All official taxis use meters. The metered fare from Dublin Airport to the city centre is approximately €25–35. Alternatively, the Aircoach bus (€10) or Dublin Airport Express (€7) are excellent alternatives.

  • Accommodation Booking Scam

Online searches for budget accommodation in Dublin city centre

Fake accommodation listings occasionally appear on Google Maps or through clone websites mimicking legitimate B&Bs. After booking and payment, the property does not exist or was never available.

How to avoid it: Book only through established platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb, the hotel's own website). Verify the address on Google Street View. Calls offering unsolicited accommodation deals should be treated with extreme suspicion.
