Safety and scams to avoid
Roppongi bar overcharge
Roppongi · Kabukicho nightlife
Foreign-fronted bar in Roppongi adds drink charges and seat fees you weren't shown; bill arrives at 5–10x expected.
How to avoid it: Stick to bars with clear printed menus and prices on the door. Ask price before sitting.
Rickshaw Unmarked Pricing
Arashiyama, Higashiyama
Rickshaw pullers (jinrikisha) offer rides without quoting prices upfront. A 20-minute ride can cost ¥10,000–¥20,000 per person. Some add extras mid-ride.
How to avoid it: Always ask for the full price before boarding. Legitimate operators display price boards. Avoid anyone who refuses to quote a price in writing.
Fake Geisha Photo Scam
Gion district
A woman in maiko/geisha dress offers a "free" photo, then demands ¥1,000–¥5,000. Real geiko and maiko are working professionals who do not pose for tourist photos.
How to avoid it: Do not approach or photograph real geisha on the street — it is considered disrespectful. Photo studios in Gion offer legitimate maiko makeovers from ¥5,000.
Rickshaw overcharging near Arashiyama
Togetsukyo Bridge area, Arashiyama
Rickshaw (jinrikisha) drivers in Arashiyama quote a price in vague terms (e.g. "per person, per zone"). Tourists end up paying 2–3x the expected amount at the end of the ride.
How to avoid it: Agree on the exact total price, duration, and route before boarding. Get it confirmed in writing if possible. Standard courses are clearly listed on operator boards — compare before choosing a driver.
