Safety and scams to avoid
Roppongi bar overcharge
Roppongi · Kabukicho nightlife
Foreign-fronted bar in Roppongi adds drink charges and seat fees you weren't shown; bill arrives at 5–10x expected.
How to avoid it: Stick to bars with clear printed menus and prices on the door. Ask price before sitting.
Takoyaki Weight Scam at Tourist Stalls
Dotonbori tourist strip
Some tourist-facing food stalls overcharge by offering "premium" sizes or adding toppings without disclosure. Quoted ¥500 becomes ¥1,500 at checkout.
How to avoid it: Agree on the total price before ordering. Visit stalls rated on Tabelog or Google Maps. Wanaka and Kuiku-ya are reputable chains with transparent pricing.
Pachinko Voucher Exchange Scam
Near pachinko parlours, Namba
Someone offers to exchange your pachinko winnings for cash at an inflated rate but takes a large cut or gives you fake currency. Also watch for pickpocketing in crowded pachinko parlours.
How to avoid it: Do not exchange vouchers with strangers outside official prize counters. Keep valuables in front pockets in crowded entertainment areas.
Dotonbori "free photo" touts
Dotonbori canal area, Namba
Photographers approach tourists near the Glico Running Man sign offering a "free photo." After taking the photo they demand payment of ¥2,000–5,000 for the print.
How to avoid it: Nothing offered as "free" on Dotonbori is free. Politely decline all unsolicited photo offers. Take your own photos — tripods are allowed at the canal-side viewing spots.
