Safety and scams to avoid
Overpriced Private Snorkel Boat
Maafushi harbour and beachside operators
Operators charge private boat rates for what turns out to be a shared group excursion with 10-15 passengers. The boat departs late, skips advertised stops, and the operator is unresponsive to complaints.
How to avoid it: Confirm in writing: number of passengers, exact stops, departure time, and refund policy. Pay a deposit only; settle the balance on return. Use operators with verified online reviews.
Bikini Beach Fake Photography Fee
Maafushi Bikini Beach entrance
Individuals (not official staff) approach female tourists on the beach claiming there is a photography permit fee or beach access charge. No such official fee exists.
How to avoid it: The public bikini beach on Maafushi has no entrance fee. Ignore anyone demanding payment. Report to your guesthouse or local police if persistent.
