Safety and scams to avoid
Cenote "Entry Fee" Scams
Roads approaching cenotes outside Mérida
Unofficial "attendants" on the roadside collect fake entrance fees before you reach the real cenote entrance. Common near Cuzamá and other off-the-beaten-path cenotes.
How to avoid it: Only pay at the official ticket booth at the cenote itself. Research the real entry price before visiting. If someone stops you on the road, drive past to the official entrance.
