Safety and scams to avoid
Currency Exchange "Commission" Trick
Geneva Airport and tourist areas
Private currency exchange kiosks (not banks) advertise "0% commission" in large letters but apply extremely unfavorable exchange rates. The true cost is hidden in the rate, not a commission.
How to avoid it: Use Swiss bank ATMs (UBS, Raiffeisen, PostFinance) for the best rates. Never exchange money at airport kiosks or hotel desks. Use the Revolut or Wise app for Indian Rupee exchange.
Fake Charity Petition Clipboard
Cornavin Station area and lakefront, Geneva
People with clipboards approach tourists claiming to collect signatures for a charity, then demand cash donations after signing. This is a common organised scam operating across major European cities.
How to avoid it: Never sign anything from strangers and never give cash to street petition collectors. Legitimate Swiss charities will not solicit in this manner.
