Kulob, Tajikistan: travel guide
Kulob (also Kulyab) is the second-largest city of Khatlon Province, located in southern Tajikistan at the confluence of the Yakhsu and Kyzylsu rivers. A proud city with deep roots in Tajik national identity, Kulob is home to the mausoleum of the revered 14th-century Sufi mystic Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani — who was born in Hamadan, Persia, but died and is buried here — and serves as a southern gateway for expeditions into the Khatlon lowlands and the Nurek Reservoir area.

Safety and scams to avoid
Overpriced Shared Taxis to Dushanbe
Kulob bus station (avtovakzal)
Drivers target foreign-looking travellers at the Kulob station and quote 3–4× the going rate for shared taxis to Dushanbe. The actual shared-taxi rate is around 70–80 TJS per seat. Some drivers claim there are no shared taxis left to justify private charter prices.
How to avoid it: Walk past the first row of drivers to the waiting area where locals gather. Ask a local or hotel staff the current going rate before approaching any driver. Never agree to a price before confirming the vehicle is genuinely shared.
