Penjikent, Tajikistan: travel guide
Penjikent is a small Silk Road gem in western Sughd Province, most famous for the ruins of Ancient Panjikent — a 5th–8th century Sogdian city whose vivid frescoes now decorate museums in Dushanbe and St Petersburg. Nestled in the Zeravshan Valley with the snow-capped Fann Mountains rising to the south, Penjikent is the best base for trekking into the Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) and exploring remote Sogdian heritage sites.
