Safety and scams to avoid
Unauthorised Balloon Operator
Göreme, usually online or via hotel tours desk
Unlicensed operators (or middlemen selling on behalf of unvetted companies) offer balloon flights at suspiciously low prices online or through unmarked hotel desks. Safety records are unverifiable.
How to avoid it: Book only with operators listed on the Civil Aviation Authority (SHGM) licensed operator list. Turkey's main reputable operators include Kapadokya Balloons, Royal Balloon, Butterfly Balloons and Sultan Balloons. If the price seems too low, it is a red flag.
Cave Hotel Misrepresentation
Online booking platforms
Some "cave hotels" are modern concrete rooms marketed deceptively with photos of other properties. The actual rooms bear no resemblance to genuine carved-rock cave accommodation.
How to avoid it: Book directly with the hotel website or through Booking.com/TripAdvisor with verified reviews. Video walkthroughs on YouTube for major Göreme hotels are widely available. Read recent (past 3 months) review details carefully.
