Safety and scams to avoid

  • Silk Counterfeit Products

Koza Han, Kapalı Çarşı (Covered Bazaar)

Some vendors sell polyester or blended fabric as "100% pure Bursa silk" at silk prices. Silk scarves and fabrics can be difficult to authenticate without a flame test.

How to avoid it: Buy silk only from established shops in Koza Han with proper branding and receipts. Genuine silk burns like hair (smells like burning hair, leaves a crushable ash). Polyester melts and smells of burning plastic. Ask for a fabric sample before purchasing a large item.

  • İskender Kebab Impostors

Tourist restaurants outside the Osmangazi centre

Many restaurants in Bursa claim to serve "original İskender kebab" but use inferior döner meat and commercial tomato sauce. Only Kebapçı İskender (the original family) serves the authentic dish.

How to avoid it: The only authentic İskender kebab is served at Kebapçı İskender on Atatürk Caddesi (the founding family's original restaurant). All others are variations. The difference in quality is immediately apparent.
