Delft, Netherlands: travel guide
A perfectly preserved canal city that looks almost unchanged from the scenes painted by Johannes Vermeer, who was born and died here. Delft's intimate scale — the market square, Gothic Nieuwe Kerk and Oude Kerk within five minutes' walk — makes it one of the Netherlands' most photogenic cities. The city is synonymous with its blue-and-white Delftware pottery, produced since the 17th century and still sold at the working Royal Delft factory. Delft is also home to TU Delft, the Netherlands' most prestigious technical university, giving the historic streets a youthful edge. An easy 15-minute train ride from The Hague.
