Maastricht, Netherlands: travel guide
The Netherlands' southernmost and most distinctly un-Dutch city — a Roman-founded settlement on the Maas river that draws as much from Flemish Belgium and the French Ardennes as from Amsterdam. Maastricht exudes a Burgundian quality of life: superb food and wine culture, animated outdoor café terraces, lively carnival celebrations and a sophisticated arts scene centred on the TEFAF art fair. The Vrijthof square — flanked by two Gothic churches — and the medieval fortification walls are among the finest urban spaces in the Benelux. It gave its name to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty that created the modern European Union.

Safety and scams to avoid
Counterfeit Meissen / Delft Porcelain at Markets
Vrijthof antiques market, Markt square souvenir stalls, Maastricht
Maastricht is a centre for antiques and decorative arts (TEFAF fair). Street and market stalls sometimes sell items labelled as "genuine Delftware" or marked with fake DELF T or Meissen signatures at inflated prices — they are mass-produced in China. Buyers pay €50–300 for items worth €3–8.
How to avoid it: Buy Delftware only from shops displaying the Royal Delft or certified DELF T Quality Mark label (hologram sticker on genuine pieces). Ask for a written provenance certificate for any antique over €50. The annual TEFAF Maastricht fair (March) is the safest venue for authenticated decorative arts.
