Rotterdam, Netherlands: travel guide

Europe's largest port and the Netherlands' architectural showpiece — a city rebuilt from near-total WWII destruction into the continent's most daring skyline. The Erasmus Bridge, the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen), the Markthal and the De Rotterdam tower have made the city a pilgrimage for architecture lovers. Rotterdam is also one of Europe's best food cities: Michelin-starred dining, outstanding street-food markets and a diverse food culture forged by decades of immigration through the port. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, displayed in the Depot, holds one of Europe's greatest art collections.

  • Transit Pass main way to get around

Seeded from the curated primary_local_modes array; per-city parameters not yet researched.

  • Walking

Every city has walking. 2.5 km ceiling is a placeholder default, not a researched per-city figure -- Singapore is sheltered and air-conditioned, Bangkok often has no pavement.

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Shell Game / Street Gambling at Waterfront

Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge) plaza, Coolsingel pedestrian zone

An operator runs a three-cup or card-guessing game with planted "winners" in the crowd. The game is rigged; every tourist who bets loses. If you win a small early round, the stakes are raised. Spectators can also be pickpocketed by associates in the crowd while attention is focused on the game.

How to avoid it: Do not participate or stop to watch. These setups are illegal; both playing and spectating expose you to theft. Walk past briskly.
