Utrecht, Netherlands: travel guide
The Netherlands' fourth-largest city and one of its most atmospheric — a compact, canal-ringed medieval core built around the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112 m. Utrecht's lower wharves (werfkelders) that once stored goods now shelter café terraces and restaurants at water level, creating one of the most charming urban streetscapes in Europe. Utrecht is home to the country's largest university and carries the energy of a genuinely youthful city. The UNESCO Rietveld Schröder House on its outskirts is a landmark of De Stijl architecture. Ideal base for Kinderdijk windmills and Keukenhof flower gardens within 60 km.

Safety and scams to avoid
Bicycle Rental Overcharging and Hidden Damage Claims
Utrecht Centraal Station, Vredenburg square, canal-side rental kiosks
Informal or poorly rated bike-rental operators charge hidden fees (lock deposit not refunded, "damage" claimed on return for pre-existing scratches) or rent out bikes with faulty brakes or steering that make them unsafe and then blame the renter. Some operators also charge a credit-card surcharge not disclosed at booking.
How to avoid it: Rent from NS (Dutch Railways) OV-fiets kiosks at the station (cheapest and most reliable for short hires) or established operators (Swapfiets, MacBike, Donkey Republic app). Photograph the bike — frame, tyres, brakes, lock — before leaving. Get a written receipt specifying any pre-existing damage.
