Gdańsk, Poland: travel guide
The Baltic's most beautiful city — a Hanseatic trading port of painted Baroque townhouses, amber markets, and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement that ended Communism in Europe. Long Market Street (Ulica Długa) rivals any boulevard in the Netherlands or Belgium; the 14th-century Crane is the most photographed structure on Poland's coast; and the European Solidarity Centre is one of the continent's most important post-WWII museums. Gdańsk shares the Tricity metro rail with Sopot's resort beach (12 km) and Gdynia's modernist harbour (20 km). Summer (July–August) is beach season; May–June and September are the sweet spot.

Safety and scams to avoid
Fake Police Officer Demanding Passport Check
Brno city centre, near main train station
Plain-clothes individuals claim to be police and ask to inspect your passport and wallet for "counterfeit notes." Real Czech police will always show a badge (průkaz) and have no authority to inspect your wallet.
How to avoid it: Ask to see the badge (průkaz policie) before complying with anything. Call 158 (Czech Police) if unsure. Real police in tourist areas almost never stop individuals for cash checks.
Fake Amber Jewellery
Ul. Mariacka (Amber Street), tourist souvenir shops near Long Market
Vendors sell plastic or synthetic "copal" resin as genuine Baltic amber at genuine-amber prices. Fake pieces are often unnaturally uniform in colour, very clear, and suspiciously cheap.
How to avoid it: Test amber authenticity: genuine amber floats in saturated saltwater (3 tbsp per glass) and feels warm to the touch. Buy only from certified members of the International Amber Association (www.amber.org.pl) or shops displaying the IAA certification logo. Avoid street vendors.
Port / Ferry Scam (Westerplatte trips)
Motława River ferry docks near Green Gate
Unofficial boat operators charge 3–4× the normal rate for the ferry to Westerplatte Peninsula. They position themselves prominently, claiming to be the "official" service.
How to avoid it: The official Westerplatte ferry (ZTM Gdańsk waterbus) departs from the dock at Zielona Brama (Green Gate) and costs ~20 PLN round-trip. Only purchase from the ticketed booth — do not pay cash to individuals on the dock.
