Poznań, Poland: travel guide

The cradle of Poland — this is where the Polish state was founded in 966 CE and where the first Piast dynasty kings were crowned at nearby Gniezno. Poznań's Renaissance Old Market Square is one of Poland's finest, watched over by the Town Hall whose mechanical goats butt heads at noon every day. The EU-protected Rogal Świętomarciński croissant is the city's edible ambassador. A massive university city with 140,000 students, Poznań hosts Poland's largest trade fairs and has a sophisticated restaurant and nightlife scene. A natural base for the Piast Route (Gniezno, Kórnik Castle, Rogalin Palace).

Safety and scams to avoid

  • Overpriced "Private" Mountain Guides

    Krupówki promenade, near bus station

Individuals claiming to be certified mountain guides offer private Tatras tours at above-market rates. Some are not certified by the Mountain Guide Association (UIMLA). Poorly guided high-altitude hikes are dangerous.

How to avoid it: Only hire guides certified by the Polish Mountain Guide Association (Polskie Towarzystwo Przewodników Górskich / PTPG). Book through the official Tatrzański Park Narodowy (TPN) information centre or established tour operators. Check for the PTPG badge.

  • Oscypek Cheese Authenticity Fraud

    Krupówki souvenir stalls, town markets

Vendors sell regular cow's milk cheese dyed and shaped to look like genuine oscypek (protected EU designation of origin sheep's milk cheese). Often sold at genuine oscypek prices.

How to avoid it: Genuine oscypek is made exclusively by certified Tatra shepherds, has a distinctive double-oval barrel shape with embossed decoration, and weighs 60–80 g. Look for the EU PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label or buy from TPN-registered shepherds in the mountains.
