Toruń, Poland: travel guide
A perfectly preserved Gothic city that never fell to WWII bombs — Toruń's entire medieval Old Town is UNESCO World Heritage–listed and one of the best-kept secrets in Central Europe. Birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473), the city's astronomical heritage is everywhere: from the Copernicus House Museum to the planetarium. Toruń's pierniki (gingerbread) carry EU Protected Geographical Indication and have been baked here since the 13th century. The Leaning Tower leans more than Pisa relative to its size. The city sits on the Vistula with a beautiful riverfront promenade and two Teutonic Knight strongholds. Easily reached in 2 h 20 min from Warsaw by train.

Safety and scams to avoid
Fake Rogal Świętomarciński (Croissant)
Supermarkets, non-certified bakeries, airport shops
Many Poznań bakeries and supermarkets sell ordinary croissants labelled "rogal świętomarcińsk" without the required certification. They lack the authentic white poppy-seed filling and semi-puff pastry.
How to avoid it: Genuine Rogal Świętomarciński carries an EU PGI certification. Look for the official certification plaque in the bakery window. The Rogal Museum (ul. Święty Marcin 80/82) and certified bakeries are the safest sources.
Overpriced Transport on Trade Fair Days (Poznań MTP)
Taxi ranks near Poznań Główny station on trade fair days
Poznań hosts major international trade fairs (MTP Poznań) which dramatically increase demand. During these events, unlicensed taxis and ride-share drivers charge 3–5× normal rates, often claiming surge pricing.
How to avoid it: Book Bolt or Free Now well in advance during Poznań trade fair weeks (check mtp.pl calendar). Public tram and bus from the station to the fairground (tram 12) is reliable and cheap at 4 PLN.
