Kraków, Poland: travel guide
Poland's royal capital and cultural crown jewel — the only major Polish city to survive WWII largely intact. The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is one of Europe's finest medieval piazzas; Wawel Hill bears 1,000 years of royal history; and the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter — Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List location — buzzes with galleries, bars, and synagogues. Day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau (68 km), Wieliczka Salt Mine (14 km), and Zakopane (100 km) make Kraków the most information-dense base for Polish travel. June–August is the busiest period; May and September offer ideal weather without the peak crowds.

Safety and scams to avoid
Overpriced Raft/Canoe Rental Scam
Vltava River landing points near Český Krumlov castle
Informal operators near the river offer raft or canoe rentals without a written agreement, then charge extra for "insurance," "equipment damage," or "return taxi" fees not mentioned at booking. Some operators withhold deposits unless you negotiate.
How to avoid it: Only rent from operators with physical offices and written rental contracts. Check that the deposit amount, return time, and any extra fees are clearly stated in writing. Operators on booking.com or with Trip Advisor listings are generally reliable.
Bar Girl / Club Scam (Drink Overcharging)
Kraków Old Town bar strip — ul. Floriańska, Grodzka, Market Square basement bars
Attractive individuals (sometimes working for the bar) invite tourists (especially solo male travellers) into a club or bar, then disappear after drinks are ordered. Bills arrive showing €50+ per drink with intimidating bouncers who block exits.
How to avoid it: Agree on drink prices before ordering. Research bar reviews on Google/TripAdvisor before entering. Do not follow strangers into establishments — choose bars you found independently. If confronted with an inflated bill, request an itemised receipt and insist on calling police (Policja: 112).
Wawel Castle Ticket Scam
Wawel Hill entrance, outside the ticket office
Scalpers sell "tickets" to Wawel Castle at the queue, charging above face value. Tickets are either counterfeit or valid but marked up significantly. Some claim the castle is "sold out" and they have the last tickets.
How to avoid it: Purchase Wawel Castle tickets only at the official ticket office on Wawel Hill or online at wawel.krakow.pl. The castle sells timed-entry tickets — book in advance in summer. Never buy from anyone standing outside the ticket office.
Metered Taxi Fraud
Kraków Old Town drop-off zones, airport
Some taxis use tampered meters that run fast, or switch tariffs (T2 night rate vs T1 day rate). The legal day rate is approx. 7–9 PLN/km.
How to avoid it: Use Bolt or Free Now app for transparent pricing. If taking a street taxi, confirm the starting rate (flagfall ≈ 7 PLN) and per-km rate before entering. Look for the city-approved rate sticker on the passenger window.
