Leiden, Netherlands: travel guide
One of the Netherlands' great university cities, founded in 1575 — the oldest university in the country, established by William the Silent as a reward for Leiden's heroic resistance to the Spanish siege of 1574. The city's web of waterways and 17th-century canal houses is remarkably well-preserved and receives far fewer tourists than Delft despite equal charm. Leiden is the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn and home to specialist museums including the National Museum of Antiquities and the Hortus Botanicus botanical garden, one of the oldest in Europe. The annual Leidens Ontzet festival on 3 October is the liveliest street party in the Netherlands.

Safety and scams to avoid
Fake Accommodation Listings During Keukenhof / Tulip Season
Online platforms — targeting visitors to Leiden and Keukenhof (March–May)
Keukenhof (near Lisse, a short bus from Leiden) draws millions of visitors in spring. Scammers post convincing but fraudulent holiday apartment listings near Leiden on informal rental platforms during peak flower season, collect full payment, then vanish. Victims arrive to find no booking exists.
How to avoid it: Book only via major platforms with verified reviews and secure payment (Booking.com, Airbnb with Superhost status, official hotel sites). Use a credit card for chargeback protection. If the nightly rate for Keukenhof week looks too good to be true (under €60 for a private apartment), it almost certainly is.
